Rules

If you are willing to judge or steward, please return to register on or after Wednesday, July 1, 2026 8:00 AM, CDT.

This competition is AHA sanctioned and open to any amateur homebrewer age 21 or older.

All mailed entries must received at the mailing location by the entry deadline - please allow for shipping time. There are no refunds for entries not recieved. Entries will be stored cold in the walk-in.

All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).

The competition organizers are not responsible for mis-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged. No refunds will be provided.

The competition organizers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries.

Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one BJCP judge.

Brewers are not limited to one entry in each category but may only enter each subcategory once.
Brewers are limited to 6 entries excluding scale ups. If you want to enter additional scaleups after using your 6 entries, contact the competition organizer.

You are not required to enter the ABV of your entry unless it is outside the typical range for style.

The competition committee reserves the right to combine categories based on number of entries. All possible effort will be made to combine similar styles. All brews in combined categories will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.

We will be using electronic scoresheets via BCOE&M v2.7. Judges bring your own device.

The Best of Show judging will be determined by a Best of Show panel based on a second judging of the top winners.

Bottles will not be returned to entrants.

Scale Ups
(enter via the special scale up categories; 50A-53A)

Brewer must live less than 50 miles from the brewery and be willing to travel to the brewery to scale up the winning beer. Brewer must not be employed by a professional brewery. Your recipe may be adjusted to fit their system and supplies. Avoid difficult to source or excessively expensive ingredients.
The oportunity to scale up is at the discretion of the brewery. It is possible they may not pick a winner.
No score sheets will be returned for scale up entries.
No barrel aged beers or wild bugs please!

Scale up #1: Comming Soon!

Entry Acceptance Rules

Each entry will consist of capped or corked bottles that are void of all identifying information, including labels. Printed caps are allowed, but must be blacked out completely. Embossed bottles are ok. Cans are accepted, but must be void of all identifying information.

Bottles must fit in a standard case box, oversize bottles may be disqualified. (Meads may, however, be any size bottle within reason)

12oz brown glass bottles are preferred; however, green and clear glass will be accepted. Swing top bottles will likewise be accepted as well as corked bottles. Cans will be accepted as above.

Bottles will not be returned to contest entrants.

Completed entry forms must be submitted with all entries, and can be printed directly from this website. Entry forms should be attached to bottle labels by a rubber band.

Please fill out the entry forms completely. Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified. Failure to note such ingredients may impact the judges' scoring of your entry.

Recipe forms are not required unless specified.

The competition reserves the right to reject/disqualify entries not adhering to rules or due to inappropriate brewer communications.

Brewers are not limited to one entry in each category but may only enter each subcategory once.

Circuit Qualification

Midwest Homebrewer of the Year
(http://midwesthomebrewer.com)
A leg of The Midwest Homebrewer of the Year (MWHBOTY). The Midwest Homebrewer of the Year competition selects the top homebrewer from the Midwest based upon points earned in participating competitions. The homebrewer with the highest Net Score at the end of year wins the title of "Midwest Homebrewer of the Year" and receives significant Prizes. Points are accumulated by winning 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in any of the homebrew competitions in the MWHBOTY Circuit. A brewer's accumulated points are multiplied by his winning percentage (his ratio of medals to entries) to calculate his Net score, upon which the competition's rankings are based.

To be eligible, a homebrewer must reside in one of the Midwest states listed on the site and must enter beer, mead, or cider in at least:

4 participating circuit competitions
10 unique BJCP categories
For a detailed description of the competition rules and the formula used to calculate a brewer's Net Score, please visit the Rules page on the website.
